Good practice examples
All of the material in this Guide has been validated through detailed discussion with many public service organisations in Wales.

The case studies below have been carefully selected to illustrate:

  1. that it IS possible to achieve significant improvements in levels of attendance in public services in Wales, and
  2. that even the well-trodden ground of absence management has scope for innovation and initiative.

The organisations described below have achieved significant improvements in their levels of attendance, creating improvement to their capacity for service delivery, improvement in the morale of the teams involved and (last but not least) improvement in the well-being of the staff concerned.

The Wales Audit Office would be delighted to add to these case studies, if there are more examples which have delivered similar or better benefits.

Cardiff County Council: Scrutiny of Sickness Absence
Carmarthenshire County Council: Establishment of professional in-house Occupational Health Service
Dyfed-Powys Police: Preventative Occupational Health
Gwent Police Force: Concerted Management Action to improve attendance
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Authority: Integration of Attendance within Performance Management Framework
Welsh Assembly Government: Attendance as a line management issue
