Cwm Taf NHS Trust
Before it became part of Cwm Taf NHS Trust, North Glamorgan NHS Trust had a fleet of 13 estates and portering vehicles and in 2006-07 it spent more than £30,000 on fuel.
In 2006, the Trust's Environmental Steering Group discussed the provision of pool vehicles for staff transport.
The Group was aware that use of the grey fleet was resulting in Trust staff claiming for more than one million miles per year. The group also acknowledged that the use of personal vehicles for business reasons also posed health and safety risks for the Trust.
The group decided to pilot the use a pool car system and a hybrid vehicle was leased. The aim was to reduce the Trust's CO2 emissions, provide cost savings, reduce health and safety risks and for the Trust to lead by example on environmental issues.
The Trust has secured improvements through the use of its hybrid pool car. These benefits include:
The hybrid vehicle is now two years old and the Trust has calculated that it has saved around £4,800 to date.
The Trust has now introduced a further 3 pool vehicles.
