The Wales Audit Office is launching a study into tidal flooding and coastal erosion in Wales. Around 60% of people in Wales live in coastal areas and current estimates show that the cost of damage from flooding will at least double and possibly increase twenty-fold over the next 80 years. This investigation will look at the effectiveness of the plans the Welsh public sector has to manage the environmental risks of tidal flooding and coastal erosion. It will also examine and to what extent the Assembly Government, together with other public bodies and stakeholders, understand the issue.
The full extent and consequences of climate change is not yet known, so plans designed to reduce the impact of flooding must manage risk rather than certainty. Stakeholders involved in the complex administration of activities are increasingly recognising the need to move to a new risk management approach. The aim of this study is to support the Assembly Government and other public bodies in testing and refining their proposals to manage the effect of costal erosion and tidal flooding and the impact on people and property. It also aims to increase awareness of the risks and promote sustainable long term solutions of costal erosion and tidal flood risk management.
