Members of the public are being asked to have their say on how they think the States of Guernsey is run. The Auditor General for Wales, Jeremy Colman, has been commissioned to carry out a corporate governance review of the government by the States’ Public Accounts Committee. He will be examining whether the States of Guernsey has effective management arrangements in place to help deliver long lasting, value for money, services for people who live on the Island.

The Auditor General will lead the review and will be supported by a team from the Wales Audit Office. Fieldwork takes place during April and May and the Auditor General expects to report to the Public Accounts Committee later in the year.

The team are looking for views from the public on the following questions:

  • Does the States of Guernsey consult you on your service needs?
  • Do you know how and who to communicate your ideas, views or complaints about public services in Guernsey?
  • Have you had positive or negative experiences of service delivery by the States of Guernsey?
  • Have you had positive or negative experiences of the way States’ departments work together?
  • Do you think the States of Guernsey delivers value for money services?
  • Do you think States Deputies and/or members of staff set a positive example in the way they behave?
  • How could the States of Guernsey improve its performance?
  • Do you think politicians and civil servants within the States of Guernsey are made accountable for their actions?

Auditor General, Jeremy Colman, said today:
“In my review of the way the States of Guernsey is run, it is important that I gather views from the very people who use the services that the States of Guernsey is responsible for managing and delivering. I am grateful to anyone who gets in touch with me and my team.”

Notes to Editors:

  • Further information can be found via the homepage of the Wales Audit Office website http://www.wao.gov.uk/.
  • While the team welcome views from anyone, they are unable to take up, or offer advice on, people’s individual cases against the States of Guernsey. They are also unable to respond to information submitted, unless they feel that it is necessary to do so.
  • The Wales Audit Office is independent of government and is responsible for the annual audit of some £20 billion of annual public expenditure.
  • The Wales Audit Office was created on 1 April 2005 following the passing of the Public Audit (Wales) Act 2004, which expanded the functions of the Auditor General for Wales and enabled the transfer of staff from the Audit Commission in Wales and National Audit Office in Wales to his employment.
