South Wales Fire Authority operates a fleet of around 450 vehicles.
The Authority was formed in 1996 and involved the amalgamation of Mid Glamorgan, South Glamorgan and Gwent fire brigades. The newly formed Authority began operating with fleet workshops in Cardiff, Newport and Pontyclun. Within 18 months the Authority decided to review its provision of fleet maintenance.
As a result of this review, the workshop in Cardiff was closed and staff were transferred to the workshop in Newport in 1998. At that time it was felt that the Authority's geographical area required more than one workshop.
In 2000/2001 a second review of maintenance provision found that the Pontyclun workshop had the capacity to absorb the work of the Newport workshop. The decision was made to close the Newport facility and the Authority has since operated only one workshop for all of its maintenance.
The rationalisation of three workshops into one has resulted in savings through the removal of overheads in two buildings. Further benefits have been secured through the removal of duplication in line management and in administration involved in running more than one facility. One member of staff was made redundant as a result of the process which generated savings of around £30,000. All maintenance processes are now standardised throughout the Authority.
