Newport City Council

01/01/2009

Newport City Council has built up a strong record of energy and water conservation during the past 10 years.

Nevertheless it has recognised that its activities in this area need to be better co-ordinated with a more proactive and authority-wide approach taken to energy and water conservation. It has reviewed and revised its Energy Conservation Strategy, taking into account national developments in energy and water conservation, and has renewed its emphasis on four key areas: targeting efforts to achieve maximum success; enhancing the skills base; tackling energy conservation issues at the source; and ensuring sound guidelines and monitoring arrangements.

One of the ways in which the Energy Conservation Strategy and its Action Plan are supported is through the appointment of energy wardens. Named individuals in Council buildings have been nominated to monitor and control energy and water conservation at all Council premises. The Utilities Team at Newport has developed and distributed a package of support to the energy wardens that includes guidance on meter reading, information on consumption for individual buildings and energy and water saving advice and activities.
