Wales Audit Office launches study into delayed transfers of care
The Wales Audit Office is asking members of the public and NHS employees to air their views on delayed transfers of care in Gwent and Cardiff/Vale of Glamorgan hospitals. A delayed transfer of care occurs when a patient is ready for transfer from a general or acute hospital bed but is still occupying that bed. The study will look at whether NHS trusts, local health boards and councils are taking effective action to tackle the extent and causes of delayed transfers of care in a sustainable way. It will also look at how improvements can be made.

The study team are interested to hear people’s views and experiences relating to patient transfers in the Gwent and Cardiff/Vale of Glamorgan areas, as well as ideas on how people feel current systems could be improved. For obvious reasons, the team are not able to take up, or offer advice on, people’s individual cases.

You can get in touch in the following ways:

Online questionnaire: Visit our website http://www.wao.gov.uk/whatwedo/1612.asp

The review is being carried out in order to identify the key constraints in relation to delayed transfers of care in the target areas. Delayed discharges have a direct and negative impact on the quality of care of individuals. Once the review is completed, the Auditor General is likely to issue a national report, which could then form the basis of an evidence session at the National Assembly’s Audit Committee.
