The Auditor General's report on the National Fraud Initiative 2008/09 was released on 20 May 2010 and provides a summary of the outcomes and the successes of the scheme.
The NFI 2008/09 detected and detected and prevented £4.5 million of fraud and overpayments in the public sector and also resulted in the successful prosecution of 28 fraudsters.
The NFI has been, and continues to be, a highly effective tool in detecting and preventing fraud and overpayments. Since its commencement in 1996, the NFI exercises have resulted in the detection and prevention of more than £16 million of fraud and overpayments in Wales and £664 million across the UK.
