Police and probation
Return to previous
We audit Wales’ four police authorities, its four probation boards/trusts and the Police Authorities of Wales joint committee. We review how well they manage their finances and assess whether they have proper arrangements in place to deliver efficient and effective services.

We work in partnership with the Audit Commission and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) to carry out inspections of Police Authorities in Wales.

As part of our value for money arrangements work, we carry out Use of Resources evaluations at police authorities. We assess each authority’s arrangements under three areas – managing finances, managing other resources and governing the business.

We publish independent reports, make recommendations for improvement, and highlight examples of good practice.

We have published reports in partnership with the Audit Commission on the police use of resources and the quality of crime data.
