We audit the accounts of NHS trusts and health boards in Wales, review how they manage their resources and whether their services are run as effectively, efficiently and economically as possible.
Each year, the Auditor General for Wales undertakes a number of national value for money examinations on health-related topics. The results from these studies are published in independent reports which make recommendations for improvement and highlight examples of good practice to promote better health services for citizens.
These reports are presented to the National Assembly for Wales’ Public Accounts Committee, which can go on to undertake specific inquiries into issues of interest or concern arising from our work.
We are also developing closer links with other Assembly Committees, such as the Health, Wellbeing and Local Government Committee.
We often join forces with other audit and inspectorate bodies. Partnership working with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales has led to the publication of reports such as Services for children and young people with emotional and mental health needs.
We also meet regularly with Audit Scotland and the National Audit Office to share information and are developing a programme of work with the Audit Commission involving data collection and performance comparisons in specific services across England and Wales.
The Wales Audit Office is a signatory to the Concordat for health and social care in Wales along with HIW, Estyn and CSSIW. Wehave declared our intention to continue to develop our approach to joint working. This will help to deliver the aims of the Assembly Government’s Policy Statement on Inspection, Audit and Regulation.
