Event - Audit Committees: effective practices and a positive impact

  • Our next Good Practice event is being held on 22nd May in Cardiff City Stadium.

    Good governance arrangements are a critical part of how public service organisations function effectively and deliver value for money services for the citizens and communities of Wales.

    Audit Committees are one of the foundation stones that support good governance. With significant current and future pressures on public sector finances, there is an increasing need for effective practices and a positive impact. Audit Committees play a vital role in this.

    This event provides an opportunity to share experiences, learn, and network with peers across the public sector in Wales.

    10.40am             How can we prevent failure?

    Paul Dossett, Head of Local Government, Grant Thornton

    Paul is the author of ‘Preventing failure in Local Government’. Paul will discuss the importance of having a clear understanding of the common causes of failures and how this provides useful intelligence for other local authorities, local government bodies and for central government in preventing future failures.

    An opportunity to share and learn from peers in small working groups discussing the question ‘What does good look like for audit committees?’.

    13.30pm             Workshop: Root Cause Analysis: What is it and how does it work?
                               Research and Development team, Audit Wales

    Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is the process of discovering the root causes of problems in order to identify appropriate solutions. Our Research and Development Team will walk through a case study example (Edinburgh Trams) which will allow participants to gain practical experience of using the RCA method.

    A panel discussion chaired by Ann-Marie Harkin, Executive Director of Audit Services, Audit Wales. Our panel will reflect on the key themes during the day and focus on the big issues facing the future. As well as this, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion with participants.
